David Fleming
Chairmaker

wb

Working with wood since the age of six, David has a keen interest in the craft traditions of rural Britain, Upper Canada and the Appalachians. He gained his art and education degrees at Queen's University in Kingston and has recently retired from a high school teaching position in order to pursue his craft without distraction. An avid student of the woods, he builds birchbark canoes and snowshoes for trips into the wilderness.

At his shop in the Ottawa Valley village of Cobden he produces a variety of 18th and 19th century replicas as well as contemporary designs of his own. His chairs grace homes throughout Canada and the USA.

He has exhibited at the Durham Wood Show, the Elora Home Sweet Home show, the Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show, the Ottawa Wood Show, the Ottawa Spring Home Show, the McLaughlin Woodworking Museum and in many other show, museums and artisan tours.

Above his workbench is the Welsh proverb:

"Dyfal donc a dyrr y garreg"

which translates as:

Many blows will break the stone

or:

Keep plugging away till you get it right!
